Okay, so the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization has pulled its funding from Planned Parenthood. The usual suspects have their collective panties in a wad, much like they bunched their knickers when Lowe's pulled their commercial dollars from that crappy Muslim show on TLC.
From the numbers I saw, the Komen foundation gave approximately $700,000 to Planned Parenthood last year. Money from the Komen foundation paid for about 170,000 breast exams (from the @ 4 million performed by PP or 4.25% of the total breast exams) and also paid for 6,400 mammogram REFERRALS out of 70,000 (9.14%) over the last five years.
So really the Komen Foundation wasn't a big investor in Planned Parenthood. However, PP tried to use their mammogram referrals (they, in most cases, do not actually perform the mammograms) and their connection to the Komen Foundation to avoid the abortion debate. Now that veil of obfuscation has been taken away and leaves them open to more transparency--something that most large organizations, especially those sucking on the public teat and who are under investigation for the misuse of federal funds, would like to avoid.
ETA: Himself reminded me that funds can be shifted once received, which might be another reason for Komen pulling their funds--that they weren't being used for the purpose given.
