So, trying to sound like an American and failing badly

Obama, who apparently really has no idea about American culture, not being raised here and all, said something about Gibbs (who is thankfully leaving the White House) 'taking one for the gipper' (by giving up his tie).  Now anyone familiar with American idiom and quotes knows that a person will "win just one for the Gipper" or "takes one for the team".  There is a very big difference between the two.  And I don't know who wrote up the commentary or if it was copied from Obama's speech, but Gipper (nickname for George Gipp as played by Ronald Reagan) would be capitalized.  But what do you expect from someone who throws like a girl, as illustrated by KurtP here.

Jeeze, it's like he's a Manchurian mash-up or something, saying whatever comes into his head, filtered by a thousand fuzzy miles of telephone exchanges until the original meaning is dead. Sputnik-boy!!

Exactly. Shows absolutely no understanding of the context of the statement. Gotta be raised with it, I think.
